How I Went From a Small, Insecure Kid to a Drug-Free Bodybuilding Champion

Side Tri - bedroom

Yes, I know I’m in my boxer briefs and socks.

It all started in the late 80’s. I was a young teenager who was trying to find himself…and feeling very insecure. That’s when I first saw a Lee Labrada on the cover of Muscle & Fitness. I was in awe. The strength and physical perfection his physique portrayed was mind boggling to me. And that look of confidence on his face…I wanted that!

I opened the magazine and everything about Lee Labrada struck a chord with me. He was short. So was I. He was a man of faith. Family and faith are the two most important things in my life. He was a thinking man’s bodybuilder. I’ve always been driven my knowledge and logic.

I had found my role model. I had found my personal path to what I wanted to become.

This was my initiation to bodybuilding. When I started, I had no clue how to train or eat properly. I was complete neophyte open to learning anything and everything. The two things I learned very quickly were….

  1. I had some pretty shitty genetics (I’m blessed with coming from a family built like meatballs). And…
  2. I also learned that the physiques that I admired most were all jacked up on steroids.

Like it or not, steroids were (and are) against the law and I wasn’t willing to break the law. But neither of these two things deterred me. It just meant I had to work smarter and harder.

I WANTED IT!

This desire and passion lead me through what would become years and years and years of education. Once I started training, I fell in love. Every waking hour of my day seemed to be spent learning anything I could about physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, and everything in between that would further my progress. It even would lead me to what I eventually went to college for…Health Science.

My desire to train and my desire to learn were way more powerful than my shitty genetics. I started utilizing one training system and diet after another. After countless wasted hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars pissed away I finally learned what kind of training and nutrition protocols work for drug-free bodies that want to pack on as much beautifully sculpted muscle as possible. This committment to my own personal physique and performance has earned me countless awards and recognition…
